About Sibyl Johnson

Plein Air Painter

Sibyl Johnson is a fourth generation Californian. She grew up in Northern California and spent summers exploring the mountains and beaches around Monterey Bay as will as the Sirerras. She knows and loves her native state. The painting of landscape en plein air is an emotional response to her conern for the loss of the California of her youth.

Sibyl holds a double BA in Education and Fine Art as well as a Master’s degree in Education. A 30 year teaching carreer was interrupted only once for the opportunity to teach art as a single subject for the Dept. of Defense Schools in Germany. The two years in Central Europe were devoted to Art Education and visits to the world’s major art museums.

Sibyl’s art education has been continuous. Twenty years of evening classes, mainly in life drawing, has resulted in advanced drawing skills. Over the years she has studied with the best local artists and traveled to work with other well know teachers.

After a long carreer in the classrooom the goal to be a full time painter and to return to live in her family’s Carmel cottage has become reality.

Education

BA San Diego State University, in Education and Fine Art. MA in Education Continuous art classes in life drawing and painting from professional artists at the university level and privately (20+yrs). Full time artist (5yrs).
